JACQUES LŒUILLE
The Time of Fools
Madness has not always been a medical issue. Between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the figure of the madman haunted a society in upheaval. Omnipresent in the paintings of Bosch and Bruegel, he embodied the many anxieties of a disoriented Europe. Through his subversive power, the "madman" ignited imaginations, crystallized the contradictions of his time, and became the harbinger of nascent modernity.
